FIRESTORMS!
By Karyl Miller, prez, SCCS

During our recent fires I received a flood of Emails from SCCS members worried
about other members.  Our SCCS-online Yahoo Group Electronic Bulletin Board
provided the perfect forum for members to report on their neighborhood fire
situations.  Many of the fire stories they told were harrowing but all had happy
endings.  So far no cartoonist that we know of has lost a home, although many were
temporarily displaced. We’re all sick of the smell of smoke.

On the heels of that, another firestorm arose (albeit figuratively) regarding a recent
Crankshaft cartoon that offended many in the blogisphere (especially women).  For
those who didn’t see the cartoon in the Union Trib it can be seen at
http://shakespearessister.blogspot.com/2007/10/rape-still-not-hilarious-still-not.html
along with the blog about it.

I thought the issue would be of interest to SCCS-rs because it involved interpreting a
cartoon in a venerable strip.  I asked for opinions and a flood of controversy ensued.  It
was fascinating.  We seemed to be split along similar lines as we were back during the
Clarence Thomas - Anita Hill hearings.

At this point it seems like everyone who was going to weigh in on this or the fire has
already done so, but you can add your 2 cents (or just read the posts) by signing up
for our Yahoo Group.  The SCCS Yahoo Group is such a wonderful tool; it’s surprising
to me that every SCCS-r hasn’t signed up. Messages will be sent to whatever Email
address you designate – NOT necessarily a Yahoo.com one.  Advantages:
•        Get Email reminders about future meetings.
•        Get current events about members and about the cartoon world.
•        Download past and current issues of our club magazine Slice of Wry.
•        Post a question about cartooning.
•        Start a discussion about something relevant.
•        Caveat: Anyone who makes an ash of himself will be kicked off post haste.

So join today!  You’ll be glad you did. Go to this link.
